Travel Insurance
Important information:
Passport & Visa
A valid passport is required, with at least 6 months of validity remaining from your departure date and at least one blank page for visa endorsement . Most nationalities require a visa to enter Kenya. Apply online for an e-visa through the official government portal before travel—this is recommended over visa-on-arrival to avoid lengthy processing at the airport . Keep a printed copy of your e-visa and return flight details for immigration.
Health & Insurance
Yellow fever vaccination is required for all travelers over 1 year of age arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission. It is strongly recommended for all visitors . Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus are often advised. Malaria is present in Kenya—antimalarial medication, insect repellent, and mosquito nets are essential. Tap water is not safe for drinking—stick to sealed bottled water. Travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unforeseen circumstances, medical emergencies, or trip interruptions .
Currency & Payments
The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). US Dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, but notes must be dated 2004 or later with the latest security features—older notes are often refused . Credit cards are accepted in hotels, larger restaurants, and shops in Nairobi. Carry sufficient cash for smaller establishments, markets, and tipping. ATMs are readily available in Nairobi but may have withdrawal limits .
Physical Requirements
This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, including uneven terrain at wildlife parks, archaeological sites, and nature trails. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Game drives involve sitting for extended periods with opportunities to stand for photography. Amboseli's altitude (1,200 meters) is manageable for most visitors.
What to Pack
Lightweight, breathable neutral-colored clothing (khaki, beige, olive—avoid bright colors and dark blue which attract tsetse flies), warm layers for early morning game drives (temperatures can be cool at dawn), comfortable walking/hiking shoes, sandals, wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF50+), insect repellent (DEET-based recommended), reusable water bottle, binoculars for wildlife viewing, camera with zoom lens, power adapter (British three-pin type G, 240V), and your passport and visas. Soft-sided bags are preferred for safari vehicles.
Dress Code
Nairobi is relatively cosmopolitan but modest dress is appreciated. When visiting local communities (optional Maasai village visit), dress conservatively—shoulders and knees covered. Casual attire is fine elsewhere. For fine dining, smart casual is appropriate. Neutral colors are recommended for game drives to blend with the environment.
Check-in/Out
Standard hotel check-in time is typically after 14:00. Check-out is usually before 11:00. Early check-in or late check-out is subject to availability and may incur additional charges. Safari lodges may have flexible schedules aligned with game drive timings.
Safety Notes
Nairobi has areas with higher crime rates—avoid walking alone at night, don't display valuables, and use hotel safes for passports and excess cash . Westlands and Karen are considered safer neighborhoods . Use ride-hailing apps (Uber, Bolt) rather than hailing taxis on the street. On game drives, remain inside the vehicle at all times unless your guide indicates it's safe to exit. Listen to your guide's instructions regarding wildlife encounters.
Emergency Contacts
Kenya emergency number (police/ambulance/fire): 112 or 999. Download WhatsApp for easy communication with guides and drivers. Save your country's embassy contact details before travel. Major hospitals in Nairobi include Aga Khan University Hospital and Nairobi Hospital.

Best Time to Visit (Seasonal Travel Guide)
Peak Season (July to October)
The best time for wildlife viewing, coinciding with the Great Migration in Maasai Mara. Dry conditions concentrate animals around water sources. Pleasant temperatures, clear skies, and excellent game viewing. Expect larger crowds and higher prices. Wildebeest river crossings typically occur July-September.
High Season (January to March)
Warm, dry conditions with excellent wildlife viewing across all parks. Fewer tourists than peak migration months. January-February offer great game viewing with pleasant temperatures. March is hotter but still rewarding before the rains begin.
Shoulder Season (June & November-December)
Transitional months with some rainfall but generally good conditions. June offers green landscapes and fewer tourists. November sees short rains (usually afternoon showers) with lush scenery and baby animals. Lower prices and uncrowded parks.
Low Season (April to May)
Long rainy season with afternoon downpours and some lodges closing. However, this offers the lowest prices, lush green landscapes, spectacular birding (migratory species present), and dramatic skies. Some parks remain accessible. Best for budget travelers and photographers seeking dramatic scenery.
Special Events
Maasai Mara’s Great Migration (July-October) is the main event. Madaraka Day (June 1) celebrates Kenya’s self-governance with festivities.
