Passport & Visa
A valid passport is required, with at least 6 months of validity remaining from your departure date. Most nationalities require an e-Tourist Visa (eTV) to enter India. Apply online through the official Indian government website at least 4-7 days before travel. The visa is typically valid for 30 days from arrival and costs approximately USD 25-40 depending on nationality and season. Keep a printed copy of your e-visa approval along with your passport.
Health & Insurance
No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry, but Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus are often recommended. Malaria prophylaxis is advisable if visiting rural areas. Tap water is not safe for drinking—stick to sealed bottled water. Avoid ice in drinks and raw salads in street-side establishments. Travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unforeseen circumstances, medical emergencies, or trip interruptions.
Currency & Payments
The local currency is the Indian Rupee (INR). Credit cards are accepted in hotels, larger restaurants, and shops in cities, but expect to pay a 2-3% surcharge. It is essential to carry sufficient cash for smaller establishments, markets, village shops, and tipping. ATMs are readily available in towns like Munnar, Thekkady, and Cochin but may run out of cash in remote areas. Major foreign currencies (USD, EUR, GBP) can be exchanged at airports and authorized exchange centers.

Lightweight, breathable cotton clothing (for humid coastal areas), warm layers (for cool evenings in Munnar and Thekkady), comfortable walking/hiking shoes, sandals/flip-flops, sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF50+), a wide-brimmed hat, insect repellent (DEET-based recommended), rehydration salts, basic medical kit, reusable water bottle with filter, power bank, sarong or scarf for temple visits (shoulders and knees must be covered), and your camera. Dress Code
Kerala is relatively liberal but modest dress is appreciated. When visiting temples, shoulders and knees must be covered—remove shoes before entering. Women should avoid sleeveless tops, shorts, or short skirts in rural areas and religious sites. Swimwear is acceptable at beach resorts but cover up when leaving the beach area. On houseboats, casual comfortable clothing is perfectly fine.
Check-in/out
Standard hotel check-in time is typically after 14:00. Check-out is usually before 12:00. Early check-in or late check-out is subject to availability and may incur additional charges. Houseboat check-in is around 12:30 PM and check-out is next morning by 9:00 AM.
Safety Notes
Kerala is one of India's safest states with low crime rates and friendly locals. However, exercise normal precautions—keep valuables secure, avoid isolated areas after dark, and be aware of your surroundings in crowded markets. Women travelers should feel comfortable but may attract attention; dressing modestly helps. Monkeys can be mischievous—do not feed them or keep food visible.

Best Time to Visit (Seasonal Travel Guide)
Peak Season (November to February)
The most pleasant time to visit with cool temperatures (17-32°C), low humidity, and clear skies. Ideal for sightseeing, hill stations, backwater cruises, and beach activities. Expect larger crowds and higher prices at hotels and houseboats. Perfect for outdoor exploration and wildlife spotting at Periyar.
Shoulder Season (March to May):
Warmer temperatures (24-36°C) with increasing humidity, especially in coastal areas. Hill stations like Munnar remain pleasant and less crowded. Great time for budget travelers to find deals on accommodations. Wildlife viewing improves as animals gather near water sources. Afternoon breaks in air-conditioned spaces recommended.
Monsoon Season (June to September)
Heavy rainfall transforms Kerala into a lush, emerald paradise. Spectacular waterfalls, misty hills, and fewer tourists. Considered the best time for Ayurvedic treatments (traditional belief that pores open maximally during rains). Houseboat cruises may be affected by rough waters, but land-based activities like spa retreats and cultural performances thrive. Lowest prices of the year.
Post-Monsoon (October)
Lush landscapes, receding rains, and pleasant temperatures return. Excellent time for photography and enjoying Kerala’s natural beauty without peak season crowds. Many festivals, including Diwali (October/November), celebrated with lighting and festivities. A hidden gem period for savvy travelers.
