Important information:
Passport & Visa
A valid passport is required, with at least 6 months of validity remaining from your departure date. Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Cairo Airport or purchase an e-Visa online before travel through the official visa portal. Check specific requirements for your nationality before traveling.
Health & Insurance
No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry, but Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus are often recommended. Tap water is not safe for drinking—stick to sealed bottled water. Avoid ice in drinks and raw salads in street-side establishments. Travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unforeseen circumstances, medical emergencies, or trip interruptions.
Currency & Payments
The local currency is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). Credit cards are accepted in hotels, larger restaurants, and shops in tourist areas, but carry sufficient cash for smaller establishments, markets, and tipping. ATMs are readily available in cities. Major foreign currencies (USD, EUR, GBP) can be exchanged at banks and authorized exchange centers.
Tipping (Baksheesh)
Tipping is an integral part of Egyptian culture. Have small bills ready for guides, drivers, hotel staff, restaurant servers, and even restroom attendants. Guidelines: EGP 50-100 per day for guides, EGP 30-50 per day for drivers, EGP 10-20 for hotel porters, and small change for minor services.
Physical Requirements
This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, including uneven terrain at archaeological sites, steps inside pyramids and tombs, and exploring markets. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Some sites involve climbing and descending narrow passageways.
What to Pack
Lightweight, breathable cotton clothing (for warm days), a light jacket or sweater (for cooler evenings and air-conditioned spaces), comfortable walking shoes, sandals/flip-flops, sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF50+), a wide-brimmed hat, insect repellent, reusable water bottle, scarf or shawl (for mosque visits—shoulders and knees must be covered, women should cover hair), power adapter (European two-pin, 220V), and your camera.
Dress Code
Egypt is a Muslim country with conservative dress expectations. Dress modestly, especially when visiting mosques and religious sites—shoulders and knees must be covered, and women should carry a scarf to cover their hair. Swimwear is acceptable at hotel pools but cover up when leaving the pool area. Casual attire is fine elsewhere, but avoid revealing clothing.
Safety Notes
Cairo is generally safe for tourists visiting major attractions, especially when using licensed transport and following local guidance. Be prepared for persistent vendors and negotiate firmly but politely—a simple "La, shukran" (No, thank you) is often sufficient. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings in crowded markets.
Check-in/Out
Standard hotel check-in time is typically after 14:00. Check-out is usually before 12:00. Early check-in or late check-out is subject to availability and may incur additional charges.
Emergency Contacts
Egypt emergency number (police/ambulance/fire): 122 (police), 123 (ambulance). Download WhatsApp for easy communication with guides and drivers. Save your country's embassy contact details before travel.
